Scarlet Red Linen Suit
There are linen suits, and then there are linen suits that look better at 1:17 in the morning than they did at dinner.
This one is the latter.
Cut in Ireland from Dugdale Bros’ Lagan Valley linen, the cloth begins life with all the manners you would expect from proper Irish linen; weight, structure, a certain old-world discipline, before being dry-washed to soften the hand and take some of the starch out of its personality. The result is 340 grams of linen that drapes instead of floats, crumples instead of collapses, and gets considerably more interesting the longer you wear it.
Which is precisely the point.
The ARNY Linen Suit was never intended for the man trying to look freshly pressed at four in the afternoon. It is for the man who put it on at noon, had a martini at five, missed dinner entirely, and somehow ended up drinking something cold on a terrace well after midnight.
The jacket is cut with the louche proportions we like: soft through the shoulder, generous through the lapel, easy through the body. The trousers sit high and fall long, with enough room to move like trousers used to before menswear became terrified of fabric.
Nothing is too precious. Nothing should be.
Linen should crease. Sleeves should get pushed up. The jacket should eventually remember the shape of the man wearing it. Dugdale’s dry-washing process gives this cloth an already lived-in quality that is softer, more fluid, almost as though someone stylistically iconic owned it before you did.
