There are coats made for weather, and then there are coats made for arrival.
The Haring belongs firmly to the latter.
Black. White. No polite middle ground. An exploded houndstooth pulled apart until the old English gentleman’s check starts behaving like downtown New York in 1982. What had once belonged to shepherds, country houses and sensible winter wardrobes suddenly looks as though it has spent the night below Fourteenth Street.
That was the point.
In the early eighties, Keith Haring found those matte-black advertising panels sitting empty in the New York subway and attacked them with white chalk. No permission. No preciousness. Just line against darkness, moving fast enough to become its own language. The city supplied the canvas. Haring supplied the nerve.
That black and white collision stayed with me.
Much of ARNY begins somewhere in that New York; the one where painters, musicians, tailors, dealers, degenerates and geniuses all seemed to borrow from one another without asking. Basquiat could make a crown feel dangerous. Haring could make three white lines on black paper feel more alive than an entire gallery. Clothes should occasionally have the same nerve.
So we took houndstooth, one of menswear’s most respectable patterns, enlarged it until respectability became slightly beside the point, and cut it into a coat with enough presence to ruin the usefulness of everything underneath it.
Because an ARNY overcoat is not insulation.
It is not the thing you reluctantly remove at coat check before revealing the “real” outfit.
IT IS THE FRIGGIN OUTFIT.
Old-world cloth. New York manners.
